The history of the this part of Rhode Island is inextricably linked to Narragansett Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Coastal trade in the colonies made early fortunes, and many captains from Narragansett Bay were pioneers in establishing the profitable China Trade. Later, the presence of the U.S. Navy created a strong military link to the sea. Recreational yachting has also played a strong role in the area, highlighted by the golden age of the America's Cup in Newport.
